The First Picture of a Black Hole in History !
The global project “Event Horizon Telescope” (EHT) was focusing on two black holes through several worldwide-spanning radio telescopes over years. Finally, it could make this picture from an ultra-massive black hole from the galaxy Messier 87. It is the first time humankind could make a picture from a black hole. This achievement is comparible only with the historical moment of moon landing.
According to news, observations show that jets are fired out of the newly discoversd Black Hole Messier M87 which “are moving at greater than 99% the speed of light” (https://www.universetoday.com/144520/m87s-black-hole-is-firing-out-jets-that-travel-99-the-speed-of-light). This analysis had been done by using x-ray data.
1945-1952 - Space Station by Wernher von Braun - Von Braun was a leading aerospace engineer first in Germany until 1945, and after being captued by U.S. forces in the same year, he continued working for NASA in U.S. He made United States able to develop the Saturn/Apollo program, making humans landing on the moon. The pictures here by NASA show one of Wernher von Braun’s fantastic plans, designing a space station for humans. NASA said that “(Wernher von Braun is) without any doubt the greatest rocket scientist in history”. The design, a toroidal station spun to provide artificial gravity, would be made very familiar to the American public over the next six years. The design was elaborated at the First Symposium on Space Flight on 12 October 1951 at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. The design was popularized in the series in Colliers magazine, illustrated with gorgeous Chesley Bonestell painting, in 1952. The 1946 version used 20 cylindrical sections, each about 3 m in diameter and 8 m long, to make up the toroid. The whole station was about 50 m in diameter and guy wires connecting and positioning the toroid to the 8 m-diameter central power module. This was equipped with a sun-following solar collector dish to heat fluid in a ball-shaped device. The heated fluid would run an electrical generator. Presumably visiting spacecraft would dock or transfer crew at the base of the power module.”

International rendezvous in space. The Soviet Soyuz 19 spacecraft approaches the Apollo Command Service Module for docking during the Apollo Soyuz Test Project, July 1975. The historic mission was the 1st joint American/Russian space flight & symbolic of the end of the space race which kicked off with Sputnik back in 1957. The Docking Mechanism of the CSM is visible at the top of the photo. Soyuz 19 spent 5 days & 22 hours in space completing 96 orbits while the Apollo spacecraft orbited 148 times over 9 days.
The garage door’s open. The 363-foot Saturn V rocket is set to slide into the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center. The VAB is the tallest building (outside an urban area) in the US. It was the tallest building in Florida until 1974 & is the largest single story building in the world at 526 feet.
In short, a super massive black hole is what awaits us at the center of our universe. We have named it Sagittarius A or Sgr A* for short. It is about 26,000 light years away or 150,000 trillion miles away. Surrounding this black hole is about 25 to 30 massive stars called Wolf-Rayet stars (For more information on Wolf-Rayet stars click here). These stars are being constantly pulled by Sgr A* and therefore eject part of their gases which collide with space dust and other gases, causing huge, super hot shock waves. Since these waves are so hot, they actually produce x-rays and we are able to see these reactions with the Chandra X-Ray Telescope.
So, how do we know there is a black hole in the center of our galaxy? Well, black holes are so dense, they cause reactions with stars and space dust around them, just like the Wolf-Rayet stars. These reactions cause an abundance of x-rays and radio waves, and with newer technology we are now about to detect these from so far away. Not only that, but we have visually seen the paths of stars orbiting something in such a way, that even though we cannot see it, it must be something as dense as a black hole.
